Orgasmic Birth - The Movie

This sweeping maternity documentary takes the viewers through the birth experiences of nine women.  In seven poignant home birth stories, the women express the transformational quality of their births and the importance of their partner’s intimate support.  While two of the women give birth in the hospital, only one has the customary American hospital labor experience.  The second spends much of her labor in her own home and is transported by ambulance to deliver in the hospital.  The director artfully includes the longer hospital birth story amongst the many home births with a startling contrast.

Birth Matters Virginia has been inspired by recent films such as Orgasmic Birth and The Business of Being Born to solicit short documentary-style videos about evidence-based maternity and birth care.  The first place prize is $1000.00; second place prize it $500.00; honorable mention will receive $100.00.  Entries should be 4 to 7 minutes in duration and are due no later than 11:59 PM on Mother's Day, May 10, 2009.  Videos may include footage of birth, but do not necessarily have to include birth images.  We are looking for videos that will appeal to and inspire new audiences that may not have been previously exposed to any model of childbirth other than the typical version depicted in movies and on television that often appears uncertain, excruciating, dangerous, and often in need of extensive intervention from the medical field.  We're looking for good videos to show people that birth doesn't have to be this way.  How you choose to depict this is entirely up to you, the filmmaker.
